  • Inheritance tax affects a vast number of families each yea and to families who never expected to be liable for 40% tax. The number affected is growing rapidly, largely because the level at which this tax starts has not been increased adequately to reflect rising house prices.
  • On an estate of £500,000, the taxman will take £80,000, £16 in every £100, based on a threshold of £300,000 for 2007/8.
